Radioactive Waste Management

The Department of Radioactive Waste Management (NA) accepts all radioactive waste accumulated in Austria for conditioning or, for short-lived radioactive waste, for measurements pretaining to the release from control after sufficient time for decay.

In medicine, research and industry different radioactive substances at various degrees of activity are used. The correct disposal of radioactive substances that are no longer needed is an important task. This task, comprising the collection, treatment, conditioning and interim storage of materials, has been taken over by NES for many years.

Collection and transport of radioactive waste is performed by a truck specially equipped for this duty.

For optimal processing and conditioning of the various kinds of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) a number of facilities are available.

Conditioned radioactive waste is temporarily stored in warehouses with a capacity of about 10,000 200 l-drums.

Owing to these facilities, the processing of radioactive waste at Seibersdorf is on a par with international standards. Through improvements and enlargements of individual facilities they are constantly adapted to the state-of-the-art standard of science and technology.

According to the radiation protection regulations valid in Austria, all facilities and installations have to be authorized by the relevant authorities and their operation is constantly monitored.

We also carry out R&D projects that aim at improving existing and developing new reconditioning techniques.
