General information

Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf (NES) is a limited liability company under Austrian company law and an affiliate of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH. Its main tasks are to collect, process, condition and store radioactive waste on behalf of the Republic of Austria (represented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management) as well as to operate a hot cell laboratory and to decontaminate installations and laboratories from 45 years of research and development at the Seibersdorf campus (on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology).

Management and responsibility

The management team of Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH consists of the Managing Director and his Deputy.

NES is divided into two operative business departments as well as an Operational Safety Department (NB) headed by the Radiation Safety Officer, who is responsible for working out guidelines for and supervising operational safety. Each department is headed by a Department Manager.

Security strategy

The management of Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH sets the standard for the secure operation of installations and laboratories. The main points of its security strategy are the safe storage of conditioned waste and radioactive sources in compliance with the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle for employees, minimizing the probability of contaminations at the plant and of the release of radioactive substances into the environment.

Monitoring and control of the security strategy set by the NES management are carried out in-house through supervision by the NB department as well as externally through the authorization-granting authorities.

Quality management

AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH has a certified quality management system according to ISO 9001:2000, which is also valid for its affiliate Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH. Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH operates an inspection laboratory accredited according to ISO 17025, including a testing facility for sources of ionizing radiation as well as a laboratory conducting inspection measurements for environmental monitoring.

Within the framework of this certification and the accreditation an extensive quality assurance system with regular internal and external audits has been implemented. This is documented by work instructions for operational activities and regular monitoring of installations, equipment and measuring devices within specified monitoring intervals.
